Techniques for Enhancing Narrative Dialogue with Tags and Beats
Dialogue serves as a vital conduit for character development, plot progression, and the conveyance of themes. However, the effectiveness of dialogue often hinges on two lesser-discussed but equally crucial elements: dialogue tags and beats. Dialogue tags, the brief phrases that attribute speech to a particular character, such as "he said" or "she asked," play a pivotal role in clarifying who is speaking, thus maintaining the flow and coherence of conversations. Beats, on the other hand, are the snippets of action or description interspersed within dialogue, which serve to break up speech, provide pacing, and add depth to the scene, offering readers insights into the characters’ emotions, actions, and the setting without overtly stating them.
